Southern California natives know that there are many ways to explore the marine life of the vast Pacific Ocean, and visitors come from all over to experience the beauty of beachside wonder at Laguna Beach and the surrounding region. Dana Point is the epicenter of the area with access to beach towns and multiple ways to explore the wildlife activities, including whale watching. The best place for you and your family to stay in comfort while exploring the ocean is at Laguna Cliffs Resort & Spa. There are a number of aquatic activities in the area, all within minutes of our resort. Here are just a few.
Whale Watching in Dana Point
You can see a variety of sea life with a couple of different charters that depart from Dana Point. Captain Dave’s Dolphin and Whale Watching Safari offers tours all year long for whale watching fans. Depending on when you take your tour, you can see blue, humpback, minke and many other types of whales. In addition, you can spot dolphins, sharks, seals, sea lions and much more. When you book, ask about riding in a boat with the unique underwater viewing pod.
Another option for whale watching is Dana Wharf Sportfishing & Whale Watching, which also departs from Dana Point. In addition to whale and wildlife boat trips, the company offers private charters, fishing excursions, camps for kids, fishing tours and sunset cruises for a romantic evening on the ocean. If you want an idea of what you will see on your tour, the Dana Wharf Sportfishing & Whale Watching website keeps a log of all the animals seen each day.
The Festival of Whales
If you want a more complete experience, come visit during the Dana Point Festival of Whales, which takes place over the first two weekends of March. More than 100,000 people attend each year. Highlights include parades, a street fair, live music, a paddling clinic, art shows, informational seminars, multiple food options and, of course, whale watching trips throughout the day and evening. Free shuttle service throughout Dana Point provides easy access to the multitude of events throughout the area. Water taxis are available to provide an entirely different view of the festival.
The Ocean Institute
Another way to explore the marine life of the region while remaining on land is by visiting the Ocean Institute located in Dana Point Harbor. The Ocean Institute contains multiple permanent and temporary exhibits, an oceanographic research vessel, teaching labs, immersion-based field trips and the spectacular Maddie James Seaside Learning Center. In addition to oceanic adventures, travelers can ride the Pilgrim and Spirit of Dana Point, both accurate replicas of 18th-century ships. There are different camps and kids’ programs throughout the year to foster a love of the sea at a young age.
All of these events are easily accessible from our hotel. We provide a whale watching package includes two adult Dana Wharf Whale Watching tickets, boxed lunch for two and complimentary resort fee. You and your family can take advantage of the many amenities located on our hotel property, including two heated ocean-view pools, whirlpools, a children’s splash zone, a 2,500-square-foot fitness center, walking and jogging trails, and in-house rental of bikes, surfboards and boogie boards.
